Workplace mental health

Workplace mental health support is talked about a lot and very rarely implemented well.

During my time working in corporate organisations, I have seen a range of support systems for employees - be that internal training, Employee Assistance Programmes or Mental Health First Aiders. Some of these are brilliant, but they often don’t stand a chance to be successful, as the real issues lie in the culture and behaviours in-house being managed effectively in order to build better functioning and cohesive teams, rather than breeding stress, burnout and toxicity.

The cost of poor mental health to the UK economy is £300bn a year, but with the right investment this cost could be significantly reduced. Workplace mental health is a passion of mine - both due to my experience of being an employee, a manager and leader, with varied experiences of workplace mental health support. It affects almost everyone and my counselling clients share their experiences of poor workplace mental health, on an almost daily basis.

These experiences have given me a good understanding of the small but important steps that companies can take to improve the wellbeing of their staff, and I work with organisations in a number of ways to ensure they aren’t just paying lip service to workplace mental health support, but that they are putting sustainable structures in place.

Wellbeing MOT

A Wellbeing MOT is a mental health check-in, to explore patterns of behaviour that may be impacting on daily life and emotional wellbeing, to look at what mental health support is already in place, what else may be needed or to identify any areas that need deeper exploration with regular therapy.

It is designed to be attended as a one-off session or repeated periodically, possibly annually, and can be offered as a workplace benefit. It is essentially a way to spot any problems earlier and provide support in a timely manner, in a cost-effective way for your business.
